Vinay Kumar, MBBS, MD, FRCPath
Dr. Vinay Kumar is the Lowell T. Coggeshall Distinguished Service Professor of Pathology at the University of Chicago, where he also served as Chairman of the Department of Pathology from 2000 to 2016. Born in India in 1944, he was named “Best Medical Graduate” of his year at Punjab University Medical College, winning the Pfizer Award and a gold medal. He completed his PhD in experimental pathology and his residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, where he was awarded the Khanolkar Prize for outstanding research in pathology. Dr. Kumar made seminal contributions to basic research, including the discovery of Natural Killer (NK) cells in 1974. He is a passionate medical educator and the senior editor of the globally acclaimed Robbins Pathology textbooks, the most widely used medical texts in the world.
Abul K. Abbas, MBBS
Dr. Abul K. Abbas is a Distinguished Professor in Pathology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and former chair of its Department of Pathology. He received his MBBS (M.D. equivalent) in India and completed his pathology training at Harvard Medical School. Before joining UCSF in 1999, he was a professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and head of the Immunology Research Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Abbas is senior editor of Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease and author of leading immunology textbooks. His research has focused on immunological tolerance and autoimmunity, and he has published nearly 200 scientific papers.
Jon C. Aster, MD, PhD
Dr. Jon C. Aster is the Michael Gimbrone Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Hematopathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. A graduate of the University of Michigan with both an MD and PhD in human genetics, he completed his residency and fellowships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he has been on faculty since 1996. Dr. Aster’s research focuses on the Notch signaling pathway and its role in leukemia, particularly T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). He was a co-editor of the Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease from 2016 to 2025.
Andrea T. Deyrup, MD, PhD
Dr. Andrea T. Deyrup is a Professor of Pathology and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the Department of Pathology at Duke University School of Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and earned her PhD (Pathology, 1997) and MD (2000) from the University of Chicago, followed by residency training in anatomic pathology at the same institution. In addition to her work in soft tissue and bone pathology, Dr. Deyrup is recognized as a leading voice against race-based medicine in medical education, a topic on which she has given over 75 invited lectures. She is one of the co-editors of Robbins Essential Pathology and the upcoming 11th edition of Robbins & Kumar Basic Pathology.
